Transforming our Community
We’ve recently completed together a study of the book of Jonah. We discovered that in many ways we are Jonah–we follow God just up to the place where He asks us to trust Him beyond our physical, emotional or spiritual comfort zone. Then, like Jonah, we’re tempted to give in to anger and unforgiveness. We cling to idols-attitudes or things that are not God–and forfeit the grace that could be ours (Jonah 2:8). Last week we discovered that God asks us the same question He asked Jonah. “Do you “do good” to be angry?” Make no mistake! Jonah was right! The Ninevites repentance was skin deep and within a generation they would return to their evil ways. But in the meantime, a generation of Assyrians and Israelites enjoyed peace because of Jonah’s obedience. In fact, the only one who didn’t seem to experience peace was Jonah... who was still playing God with God.
So, if it is indeed “not good” to harbor unforgiveness and anger toward others, what is the good and proper response when evil is oppressing us? The book of Jonah leaves the question unanswered by the next book does not. In Micah 6:8 God gives us His answer, and this summer we’re going to explore together how we can partner with God in “doing good.” We’re calling the series “Walking in His Shoes” and inviting you to experience the world as God through Jesus experiences it. I guarantee you that it will be a wild ride, because God does not often act in the way religious people might like. But I also promise that if you will open your heart and risk being transformed by the Word of God that your life will never be the same!
